Jan 08, 2018  Bluetooth headphones connect but do not play sound I recently got a new computer, and I did not have this problem on my old one. My Sony MDR-XB950BT headset connects to my computer automatically after being turned on, and MDR-XB950BT Stereo is selected as the playback device, but no sound plays through it.

Today I’d like to ask a question to our more adventurous, minimal and/or portable gear-loving DJs. That is: Have you ever come across and used any wireless headphones and/or speakers for DJing that are actually useable?

We’ve tested software like Algoriddim’s djay with Bluetooth speakers, for instance, and were also shown a working prototype of a pair of Bluetooth headphones aimed at DJs at the NAMM show (they’ve never hit the market though). We are also big fans of Sonos for throwing music around the home. The problem with such technologies, of course, is always latency (the time it takes for the signal to hit your ears/the audience after you do something on your DJ system), as DJing and latency do not complement each other at all.

The only working method we’ve ever seen has been radio (as in the same kind of technology used for radio microphones or for those little FM transmitters you can use to “broadcast” your iPad to the car stereo on long journeys – great for convoys!), but we’ve never seen any decent DJ-friendly gear along these lines.

The reason we’re asking is purely because a few folk over on the forum appear to be interested in this stuff, we’re hearing rumblings in the industry about wireless / Bluetooth PA systems, and also we just love anything that’s gadgety in DJing… as long as it works well, of course. Ideas?

How to pair a new Bluetooth device in Windows 10

Just follow these easy steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Navigate to Devices.
  3. Click Bluetooth & other devices in the left sidebar.
  4. Set the toggle switch at the top to On.
  5. To add a new device click add Bluetooth or other device.
  6. Select Bluetooth.
  7. Choose the device from the list.

For some Bluetooth devices you'll need to enter a PIN to confirm pairing, but once it's done you're all set. A Bluetooth speaker will connect just like headphones, and it should now be the default audio output when it's on and paired with your PC.

An easy way to check this in the latest Windows 10 update is to select the speaker icon in the bottom right corner near the clock. Clicking on this will tell you the current audio output, and if you need to change in a hurry, the ^ icon will quickly open up all your available options.

If you'd like to do this on your PC but you don't have Bluetooth built-in, all is not lost. You could always pick up a USB dongle that can affordably add the ability to your computer. Or, if you're in the mood for upgrading internals, some Wi-Fi cards also come with Bluetooth built-in.
